Caley Schwartz Psychological Services, LLC
I provide diagnostic and comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational evaluations. For example, I can help to determine if you or your child has a learning disability, ADHD, anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder, difficulty with executive functioning (planning, organization, flexibility, etc.), or difficulty with memory. While many individuals are comforted to know that the difficulties they are facing are due to a specific diagnosis, the importance of a psychological evalaution extends beyond the diagnosis to provide comprehensive recommendations for intervention and support services in order to help the individual over come his/her difficulties and have success in school and in life.
At Caley Schwartz Psychological Services, LLC, I provide individualized services to meet your needs. No two individuals are alike and therefore no two assessments or treatment plans are alike. I work with you and your family to develop a plan that will achieve your goals.
Autism Spectrum Disorders
I have a particular specialty in treating individuals with autism spectrum disorders. My philosophy for treating individuals with autism spectrum disorders is one of treating the core social deficit while increasing each individual's participation in life.
Increasing an individual's competence in activities of daily living is one of the greatest motivators for continued growth and desire for learning. To this end, I involve parents and caregivers in the treatment process so that treatment can continue between therapy sessions and skills can be generalized to the naturalistic environments of the home and community. In addition, I work with schools and educators to coordinate services and to provide assistance in developing the most appropriate educational plan.
When an individual is ready, I offer small group therapy as a means of teaching collaboration within life skills and social interaction.
Treatment of Anxiety and Depression
For children and adults alike, feelings of anxiety or depression can be debilitating. My goal is to take an eclectic approach to treatment that integrates a client centered approach with cognitive beahvioral techniques. In this way, I create an individualized plan for intervention while using techniques that have been proven to be effective in the treatment of anxiety and depression.
Treatment of Behavioral Challenges
Often parents find it difficult to manage their child's behavior. Many children, especially those with ADHD, require parenting strategies that extend beyond what would be necessary for most children. As a parent, it can be difficult to decide to go for help, to accept that the strategies you have been using are not working to manage your child's behavior. In treatment, I work with families to determine what techniques have been tried and what has been effective. I then develop a plan using the information obtained from the family and provide techniques of Parent Management Training (Barkley) in order to assist parents in developing effective strategies to manage their child's behavior. I also work closely with the child's educators in order to ensure that strategies to manage behavior are consistent across all of the child's environments.
Families come to be in many different ways. The diversity this brings to the world is a wonderful thing. However, often times parents and children struggle with issues related to adoption. Due to my personal family history with adoption, I have always had a particular interest in the challenges that develop with this wonderful, yet difficult, decision. I have completed a certification in Clinical Issues in Adoption developed jointly by the CT Department of Children and Families, the UCONN School of Social Work, and Southern CT State University.
